Closeness, Prominence, and Binding Theory

چکیده
The relationship between a reeexive and its antecedent is characterized by (a) a locality condition, and (b) a syntactic prominence condition. In Chomsky (1981) locality is deened in terms of governing category, and syntactic prominence is via c-command. In this article I show that, to account for the long-distance binding properties of complex reeexive ta-zijì3s-slef' in Chinese, which cast doubts on the so-called Pica's generalization that only morphological simplex reeexives can be long-distance bound, locality should be regulated by a closeness condition, so locality is considered as a relative rather than a strict condition. I propose that the prominence condition should be deened in terms of animacy hierarchy for Chinese reeexive ta-ziji. Thus, the interpretation of reeexives can be uniied not under Chomsky's Binding Condition A, but under the Anaphor Condition proposed in this article, which is deened in terms of closeness and prominence. It is suggested that languages diier only in their deenitions of prominence.

Avicenna's Ethical Virtue
Avecinnachr('39')s ethical theory is classified within ethical virtue-oriented theories. He begins his ethical theory by discussing salvation as the ultimate purpose of human life. In his viewpoint, ultimate salvation of human is achieved though "closeness to God almighty". The way of reaching closeness is perfection in practice and opinion. Therefore, human real salvation is in his perfection ...
متن کاملApplication of Fuzzy Decision-Making to Facility Layout Planning
This research proposes a vigorous methodology based on the fuzzy set theory to improve the facility layout process. Using natural language, the fuzzy set theory is an appropriate tool for controlling complex systems such as facility planning. The closeness rating between departments in a plant depends on qualitative and quantitative factors. Some of these factors may have a greater effect on th...
متن کاملArgument Structure and Linear Order in Balinese Binding
0. Introduction This paper argues for the significance of argument structure and linear order in the binding conditions of Balinese (an Austronesian language with about 3,000,000 speakers, primarily on the islands of Bali and western Lombok, Indonesia). Our analysis employs the theory of prominence due to Bresnan (1995a,b). We show that linear order, thematic prominence, and the term/oblique di...

متن کاملGroup Centrality for Semantic Networks: a SWOT analysis featuring Random Walks
Group centrality is an extension of the classical notion of centrality for individuals, to make it applicable to sets of them. We perform a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis of the use of group centrality in semantic networks, for different centrality notions: degree, closeness, betweenness, giving prominence to random walks. Among our main results stand out the r...
